Meet the Liberty Digital Detoxers

During the first 12 days of December, 5 members of the Liberty Content team will be eschewing mobile phones, the internet and social media. Let’s meet them and see just how badly they’ll be affected.

Rosella / @ZellCopy

rosella

Who are you?

My name’s Rosella and I love the internet.

On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is hardly and 10 is a state of debilitation, how would you rank your digital addiction?

A full fat 10.

What digital platform or device are you addicted to the most?

It’s a toss-up between Spotify, Instagram and Depop. I dread to think how many hours I spend snaffling bargains, drooling over snaps of avocado toast or scoping out the latest bands.

Do you have any goals you’d like to reach during your digital sabbatical?

I’d like to say “Ta-ra”to Facebook for once and for all. To me, that app is like a burdensome chum who knocks on the door to brag about how wonderful their life is, sharing the occasional cat GIF to keep you interested.

It would be sensational to use the time wisely, maybe dust off that jilted French dictionary, master the art of the cheese soufflé or learn to draw Bill Murray. In reality I’ll probably just watch Home Alone on repeat and scoff mince pies, but let’s stay positive.

Siobhan / @Shabby_Siobhan

siobhan

Who are you?

Well, Shabby Shipman on Facebook, shabby_siobhan on Twitter or shab_86 on Instagram. Take your pick.

On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is hardly and 10 is a state of debilitation, how would you rank your digital addiction?

I’m going to go with a 7 but there’s a good chance I’m in complete denial.

What digital platform or device are you addicted to the most?

Group messaging. WhatsApp or Facebook, I’m not fussy. I’m also a bit of a binge-watcher, so Netflix plays a big part in my day-to-day life.

Do you have any goals you’d like to reach during your digital sabbatical?

I’d like to arrange an expedition to town by calling my best friends on their parents’ landline. We’ll meet at the bandstand and then go and buy Happy Meals before trying on everything in Miss Selfridge and getting our photos done in the passport machine in Boots.
You know, like in the good old days. Teenagers today don’t know what they’re missing.

Philip / @Philmoomp

phil

Who are you?

My name’s Philip and I’ma digital addict.

On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is hardly and 10 is a state of debilitation, how would you rank your digital addiction?

It’s pretty strong. It’s pretty damn strong. 9.

What digital platform or device are you addicted to the most?

Barely an hour flies without thinking about my handsome, all-conquering Bath FC boys on Football Manager. So going 12 whole days without bringing unimaginable amounts of glory to the West Country, while also reinventing the footballing wheel, is gonna be tough. I also may be significantly more addicted to Twitter than I realise.
Both my cat and my son will also really miss having a phone camera pointing at them all day, every day.

Do you have any goals you’d like to reach during your digital sabbatical?

There’s a nagging feeling that digital’s omnipotence prevents me sometimes being creative and interesting. So I’d love to write (for fun) more and make some stuff I’m proud of.

And my boy will be about 6 weeks old at the start of this mission. So it’s a great opportunity to get to know her/him without getting distracted by Tory bellends and somersaulting dogs on Twitter and Instagram respectively.

joebailed

Joe has bailed; Joe has failed.

We’re not talking to him now, and neither should you.

Carys

carys

Who are you?

I’m Carys, Liberty’s content co-ordinator.

On a scale of 1-10, where 1 is hardly and 10 is a state of debilitation, how would you rank your digital addiction?

A solid 6.

What digital platformor device are you addicted to the most?

I’m huge on my fitness, so it’s going to be tough living twelve whole days without the validation and companionship that MyFitnessPal brings.

It’ll also be interesting when I walk the love of my life, Frankie, around the beaches of South Wales and then realise I can’t use Google Maps to get home.

Do you have any goals you’d like to reach during your digital sabbatical?

I do wonder how addicted I am to my phone. This will be an interesting litmus test.
