The 5 SEO Basics That Are Often Ignored

Search engines are constantly changing and evolving, meaning that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) techniques are also shifting in order to find the best practice. It is important to keep up to date with updates in order to give your website a fighting chance at getting the best rankings. When venturing into the world of SEO it can be easy to be overcome by all the technicalities. Here are five basics which are often overlooked when optimising your website.

1 – Title Tags

Talk to any online marketer and they’ll tell you that title tags are probably the most important on-page SEO you can do. Despite this, titles are often not used to their best purpose and therefore are detrimental to your optimisation as a result. Title tags tell search engines and visitors exactly what they can expect to find on the page. This is where you need to be putting specific keywords that people will be searching for. Try to be as clever as possible with your titles as this is what people will be reading to make them click through.

2 – Quality Backlinks

Building backlinks is very important, as this shows search engines how authoritative you are. While it may be tempting to build easy links through forums, general directories or link farms, this will cause a huge amount of damage to your website. Try to build relevant links to other people, businesses and websites in your industry to increase the authority of your domain.

3 – Speed Up Load Time

Time is of the essence when it comes to website speeds. If your site takes longer than 7 seconds to load up then people are going to click the back button and go somewhere else. This is very bad for business as you’ll find that slow websites will not convert sales or enquiries. Take some time to evaluate site speed and try to improve it by minimizing your CSS and HTML – you’ll see a huge difference in the way people interact with your site.

4 – Social Media

Facebook and Twitter aren’t just great for ‘liking’ your friend’s baby pictures or following celebrities, but they are also amazing for SEO. If people are sharing and interacting with your content on social media then search engines will recognise this and will rank it higher as a result. Google+ is a very important tool when it comes to ranking, which is why you need to enable Google Authorship on all your posts in order to achieve higher ranking.

5 – Metas

Meta keywords and descriptions may not carry the same weight they used to, but they are still an important part of the website. Without them your pages will have random sections entered into the Meta description, which may not provide the content you need. Meta descriptions don’t take very long to fill in and it could provide the difference between people clicking on your link or simply ignoring it.
